Coaching Tip with Steve Darmody – Set the Backswing for Success

Coaching special for this week – bring a friend to share a lesson and only pay the single-person rate.

One of the key checkpoints in a golf swing is the ‘set’ at the top. To achieve this, follow these steps for the “Drink Waiter Drill”:

  • Swing the arms to the top into a ‘drink waiter’ position
  • Ensure the right elbow is down and the right palm is up

This sets a squarer clubface (red lines), which should be parallel to the left forearm. The clubface in the left image is very open and will create a slice. The right image demonstrates the squarer clubface with the ‘drink waiter’ right wrist and forearm.

The difference between an open and square clubface can be seen in the images below.

Take advantage of our special offer: book and pre-pay for a four-lesson package to receive a 15% discount off the regular single-lesson price.
