The Men’s Open Pennant Team travelled to Southport Golf Club last Sunday to play Lakelands for the third round of the competition on what started as another damp Sunday.
This week’s team consisted of Alfie Ward, Taylor Barr, Ethan Leighton, Sasha Cooper, Paul Smerdon, Cam Shaw and Dylan Stoner.
Once again, the competition was tough, and although we started well with most players up in their matches, Lakelands fought back to make it a very tight game with several matches finishing on the 18th. However, the boys held on winning 5 ½ to 1 ½.
Once again, Dylan secured an early win (4 & 3) to set the team rolling. Cam worked hard to get back into the game, but when his opponent slam dunked for an eagle from 120m on the 15th hole, Cam could not catch up losing 3 & 2.
Meanwhile, Taylor was in command and playing great golf winning 5 & 4, while the other matches were tight affairs. Paul Smerdon went up the 18th 1 down but pulled a rabbit out of the hat to win the hole and halve the match. Sasha kept us on the edge of our seats all the way around, successfully securing a win 1 up. Ethan kept ahead of his opponent for most of the match playing well to secure a win 2 up on the 18th. At the same time, Alfie was working hard to stay ahead in his match holding on to win 1 up on the 18th.
This was an important win and secured our position as 2nd on the table as we play Coolangatta/Tweed this Sunday at Southport once again.
