Members and their guests are invited to celebrate this Father’s Day with an unforgettable dining experience at the Club, where father and son winemakers, Kevin O’Brien and Charlie O’Brien, go head-to-head.
Kevin O’Brien, winemaker and owner of Kangarilla Road McLaren Vale, represents the master of contemporary style winemaking, while his son Charlie O’Brien, winemaker for Silent Noise Wines, showcases a low-fi style of winemaking.
The two winemakers will go head-to-head as members and guests sample their wines and judge which style they prefer. This friendly competition provides participants with the opportunity to explore the nuances of different winemaking techniques and decide for themselves which approach produces the most exceptional wine. This Father’s Day event will allow members and guests to indulge in canapés upon arrival followed by a gourmet five-course menu expertly paired with a selection of fine wines. Should this menu not meet your dietary requirements, please contact the Club and we will be delighted to accommodate you.
For those with young children, take this opportunity to relax while a professional children’s party host entertains the kids with a special two hour ‘Superhero’ party on Lakeview Terrace. Enjoy lunch while knowing your children are having a wonderful time close by. Children’s ticket price includes lunch, drinks and entertainment.
Charlie O’Brien has a rich background in winemaking, being the son of Helen and Kevin O’Brien of Kangarilla Road fame. Since finishing high school in 2016, Charlie has worked at renowned wineries in McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Margaret River and in France at Paul Mas in Languedoc and Château Haut-Bailly in Bordeaux. He is currently in his second year of wine science at Charles Sturt University. Charlie’s extensive experience has shaped his unique approach to winemaking. “I have tried to take some of the winemaking techniques from the New World and Old World and manipulate them and bend them into my own,” he says. His first solo wine was made in the 2018 vintage, although his winemaking journey began even earlier.
After studying most of a Bachelor of Science degree at Adelaide University, Kevin was working part time in the fertility lab at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Friends suggested to him that it would be beneficial to actually make wine as he enjoyed drinking it so much. Kevin didn’t need to be told twice and he transferred his degree to the Roseworthy Campus and graduated in Oenology in 1982. After graduating from Roseworthy, Kevin joined Wine Industry identities Robert Hesketh, Mark Swann, and James Herrick. Here he was involved in all aspects of the wine business from being a part of establishing Mark Swann Wines in the USA as well as being a general winemaker for the group and working on commodity supplies to the local wine industry. In 1997, Kevin, with his wife Helen, spotted an opportunity to fulfil any winemaker’s dream to express themselves by way of buying a vineyard and winery. The property they found was in McLaren Vale and they named it Kangarilla Road Winery.
