The Men’s Open Pennant Team travelled to Burleigh Golf Club last Sunday to play Links Hope Island in the second round of this year’s competition.
Due to injuries and players away, Paul Smerdon and Paul Blake were brought into the Team which was as follows: Alfie Ward, Ethan Leighton, Sasha Cooper, Paul Blake, Paul Smerdon, Cam Shaw and Dylan Stoner.
Links Hope Island fielded what was purported to be its strongest team. Halfway through the match it could have gone either way with Paul Blake, Paul Smerdon and Sasha Cooper working hard to stay in touch while slipping behind.
However, as the games progressed, Dylan and Cam won their matches convincingly 4 & 3 and 7 & 6, respectively, which set the team up well. Paul Smerdon came back from 4 down to win 2 & 1, Paul Blake from 2 down to win 2 to up and Sasha Cooper won the last 5 holes to win 2 to up.
Alfie Ward and Ethan Leighton appeared to be in control of their matches but were challenged by a strong fight back, holding on to win both their matches 2 & 1 and 1 up, respectively, to secure a win for Sanctuary Cove 7 to 0. A fantastic result and a tribute to the team that bounced back from a loss last week to Emerald Lakes.
We would like to thank our caddies for supporting the team: Naeem Rahmani (Alfie Ward), Mitch Varley (Ethan Ward), Ryan Gailey (Paul Smerdon), Junta Takagi (Paul Blake), Barrie Manning (Cam Shaw), and a special word to Cam who caddied for Sasha for the last 5 holes once he had finished his game.
In addition, thanks to Michael Chapman, Captain of Men’s Golf, who, with his wife Marcelle, supplied “snakes” for much-needed sugar intake throughout the morning.
The pictures show the team and caddies in action, and we now travel to Southport this Sunday to play Lakelands.
