The Men’s Division 1 Pennant Season, which sees the top players from the Club play against other key clubs in the Gold Coast District, kicked off on Sunday 11 February 2024.
Before the first match we were lucky enough to have Anthony Quayle come into the Club to present shirts and caps to this year’s squad on Saturday 10 February.
Paul Smerdon interviewed Anthony Quayle to get an update on his season and the benefits that Anthony received by representing the Club. Passing on a few words of welcome wisdom to the SCGCC Squad was greatly appreciated, the team which is shown in the photo below.
Back Row: Paul Smerdon, Junta Takagi, Paul Blake, Dylan Stoner, Cam Shaw, Naeem Rahmini, Ethan Leighton
Front Row: Alfie Ward, CJ Louw, Dujuan Snyman, Byron Reick, Taylor Barr
Away: Sasha Cooper and Daniel Lai
Our first match was at Mt Tamborine against the highly favoured team from Emerald Lakes. The course was very wet, with balls plugging on the greens and the rough firm and long. All this was compounded by torrential rain just before tee off and followed by heavy rain about an hour into the match. Visibility was terrible during the second shower where it was a challenge to see more than 75 metres down the fairway.
Notwithstanding the challenging conditions, we pushed Emerald Lakes right to the edge, however losing 4 to 3. Dujuan, Alfie and Ethan had great wins, holding it together over the last few holes despite a concerted push by the opposition to secure wins. Taylor went one down despite a birdie on the 18th which halved the hole, and sadly kept us from halving the match. Dylan, Sasha and Cam experiences unfortunate losses too, but we look ahead to playing at Burleigh next Sunday against Hope Island.
