On Thursday 14 December, the Ladies’ Christmas Closing Day for 2023 closed out yet another successful year of golf with a bang. 130 ladies teed it up in the Closing Day Ambrose on a hot, sunny day after a rained-out event in 2022. For a fun twist, hole 1 challenged the ladies to tee off with the opposite dexterity, testing many. Thank you to Jordan “The Elf” Hampson for assisting the ladies on this hole.
As is customary, the 13th hole welcomed the ladies with champagne, as well as the opportunity to purchase a shot to the green from a professional. In yet another twist, Executive General Manager Paul Sanders and Golf Operations Manager Ryan Gailey surprised the ladies as this year’s professionals to hit (some) quality tee shots resulting in many birdies. Thanks to our ladies’ generosity, $1,280 was raised for the Animal Welfare League of Queensland.
Every year, the ladies go to phenomenal efforts with their costumes and outfits; this year was no different. Determining the best dressed team and best decorated buggies winners is arguably the day’s hardest decision. This year, the best decorated buggies prize could not be awarded to one team alone. Sharing the title were the team of Jan Herring, Wendy Nelson, Rena Indermaur & Judy Herring, as well as the ‘Gingerbread Ladies’ team of Madonna Siokos, Fiona Law, Julie Bridges & Glenda Harry. While any of the teams could have won best dressed, the staff was challenged enough to narrow it down to 4 groups. Congratulations to the ‘Christmas Muppets’, ‘Queen of the 19th Green’, ‘Nine and Wine’ and ‘Santa’s Swinging Sisters’.
A highlight of the day was Agnes Bowyer scoring a hole in one on the 7th hole, congratulations!
This year’s scores were once again close, with the day’s competition split up into two divisions. Congratulation to the Division 2 winners Jenan Thorne, Justine Brackenrig, Courtney Brackenrig & Judy Coote with a great score of 59.5 nett. The Division 1 prize was awarded to the team of Joanna Pieper, Caitlin Cotterill, Donna Phillips & Elizabeth Stanley-Hunt with a fantastic score of 54.5 nett.
Player of the Year for Ladies’ Golf was awarded to Audy White and the most reduced handicap for 2023 dropping 12.3 shots off her handicap was Sam Bacon. Well done!
Finishing off the day were the raffles where everyone dug deep for MND Australia raising a total of $3,085. Thank you to all who donated a prize to the raffle, these can’t happen without the support of our community.
2023 was another big year for the ladies at Sanctuary Cove and we must thank and acknowledge the support and devotion of the golfing ladies. Thank you to Libby Shakespeare and Jane Mullings and their devoted team for all your help and support. We look forward to a wonderful 2024.
