Sunday 25 June 2023 came around as if the Sanctuary Cove Ladies’ Golf Classic had never seen a scheduling break. March 2020 was the last time the event was at the Club held before Covid-19 rocked the world. By moving the 2023 event to June, the 124 ladies were greeted by beautiful winter days that the Gold Coast is renowned for. This year marked the event’s 10th anniversary, and the anticipation has been the biggest thus far.
Sunday morning welcomed the ladies to the tournament with a 4-ball Ambrose to get them into the swing of things. Greeted with a light bite to eat, each player collected their welcome bags with over $400 worth of sponsored product. PGA Professional Mitch Smith from our Golf Services department hit tee shots on the 13th hole on The Pines golf course to help raise much needed funds for DV Connect. While raising $734.80, ladies enjoyed a glass of Pommery Champagne, which was kindly sponsored by Jeff Butler. Congratulations to the winners of the day, the team of Sanctuary Cove Members Marian Towler, Felicity Moore, Fiona Francis & Cathy Mathieson, with a great score of 58.25 nett.
The first night’s function offered a delightful table banquet dinner created by Head Chef Ben James and his team, accompanied by Pommery Champagne and music from Kaffene Duo.
Day two, and round one of the singles event, showcased another beautiful winter’s morning at Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club. Local knowledge of The Palms golf course saw a large amount of Sanctuary Cove Members on the top of the leaderboard. Loryn van den Berg led the way in round one with a great score of 43 points, 5 shots clear of the nearest rival. Division 1 was led by Margie Hay on 37 points, division 2 by Sarah Khouri from Southport Golf Club on 34 points, and Loryn led division 3.
Following golf, the ladies relished a leisurely afternoon before returning to the Club at nightfall. An Aperol Spritz welcome drink, kindly sponsored by Lee Braham from Campari Australia Aperol, served as the ideal appetizer for a delectable three-course alternate drop dinner menu. With their Motown hits, the Sex and Chocolate trio got the ladies out of their seats, dancing and singing the night away.
Day three was the final day of the event, played on The Pines golf course. With a late morning shotgun start, the superb morning saw the ladies gather for the annual team photo in their 2023 Ladies’ Golf Classic shirts before commencing their final round of the tournament. Sanctuary Cove Member Loryn started the day with a 5-shot lead ahead of fellow Sanctuary Cove Member Sam Bacon, plus many others hot on her tail. Halfway through the round, scores were tight with a handful of players within one stableford point of each other. With live scoring strategically hidden after 15 holes, the ladies were left in suspense to see who would win the coveted diamond putter.
Post-round, players enjoyed an exclusive taste of Margot Robbie’s gin Papa Salt which was kindly sponsored by Nathan Ford of Iconic Beverages. Head Chef Ben James and his team served another superb meal by way of a gorgeous buffet to cap off a fabulous event.
The daily winner for division one was Jacquelin Morgan from Monash Golf Club on 33 points on a count back. Division two was won by Anita Edmondson from Pacific Golf Club on 28 points on a count back, and Judy Dietrich had the day’s best score with 38 points, winning division three.
The two-day division winners were Sanctuary Cove Member Janice Wright in division 1 with a great score of 68 points, fellow Sanctuary Cove Member Janice Stirling on 63 points on a count back in division two, and Sanctuary Cove Member Marian Towler in division 3 with 69 points.
With a remarkable score of 72 points over the two days, the 2014 Sanctuary Cove Ladies’ Golf Classic Winner and Club Member Margie Hay was declared the winner of the 2023 10th Anniversary Sanctuary Cove Ladies’ Golf Classic, narrowly defeating fellow Sanctuary Cove Member Sam Bacon on 71 points.
The Club has great pleasure in announcing that $4,113.80 was raised for DV Connect during the event, by way of raffles and Mitch Smith’s services in hitting golf balls in lieu of donations. Thank you to all for your generosity.
With ladies travelling to play in the event from 37 different clubs nationwide, we would like to sincerely thank everyone for entering and participating in the 10th Anniversary Sanctuary Cove Ladies’ Golf Classic. We also wish to acknowledge our sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible.
Next year’s event is already highly anticipated, and we look forward to welcoming all ladies back for a bigger and better 2024 Sanctuary Cove Ladies’ Golf Classic.
